'CUT ABOVE THE REST' ISSUE: 1 Although it was Paul who came up with the name, in hindsight the title `Cut Above The Rest' (taken from the 1979 album of the same name, which was recorded as a 3 piece and did not feature Brian Connolly,) became a hindrance, as the title just infuriated Brian. He felt that since he did not appear on this album, then this publication only wanted to promote the remaining 3 members, a belief which was totally unfounded! Issue number 1 was produced with contributions by myself and Kevin, and focused 100% totally on the Sweet. This first issue is very rough in its content with some pictures unviewable; nevertheless it was quite a monumental and important land mark as all publications have to start somewhere. Who would have imagined that I would be here still producing the fanzine after all these years! Was released in July 1986 by then editor Paul Pexton, a Sweet fan and musician based in Hull, (a town in the north of England.) Paul approached myself and fellow Sweet expert Kevin Smith to help with writing material for the new publication. I came up with: The Ultimate Sweet fanzine" heading (a title stolen from a copy of `Kerrang' British Heavy Metal magazine,)
Was released in august 1987 (No actual release date featured on the front cover again released by Paul Pexton.) This issue included a 8 page `Sweet lyric songbook,' a Sweet survey, a Brian Connolly live review from `Cheshire Leisure' - 15/12/86, plus loads of exciting archive Sweet press reprints.
Was released in January 1988 and was the last issue published by Paul Pexton who by now had decided that he no longer wanted to participate in the project. (Copies of these 3 issues are now quite hard to locate, as Paul had the master copies to these issues, and although I asked to borrow them to get extra copies run off nothing was ever sent!) This issue featured a review of the only ever released vinyl sweet bootleg album, a report on the sweet related band `angel', a live Andy Scott & `Paddy Goes to Holyhead' - 25/7/87 feature, as well as all the usual exciting fanzine fare!
Was released in December 1988 by new editor and Sweet expert Kevin Smith. With Paul deciding to relinquish all connections with the fanzine, it was decided by myself and Kevin to alternate in producing `cut above the rest', he would release issues 4, 6, 8 etc and I would publish issues 5, 7, 9 etc. Issue 4 took nearly a year to release due to all the problems in editorial change over, responsibilities. Nevertheless this issue continued in the pattern of the previous 3 releases with features on the Andy Scott produced Scandinavian chart toppers: `Sha boom', a rare `Sweet/Middle of the road' LP article, and transcripts of 1988 Sweet radio interviews etc.
Was released on the 4/07/89 by new and present editor Cos Cimino. This issue featured reviews of Andy Scott's time with the pub-party band `The Wandering Crutchlee's` live in Birmingham 20/5/89, a feature on Andy Scott's sound equipment, Sweet crossword competition, Sweet news etc.
Was released on the 4/01/90 and although it was originally decided that Kevin would take over production for this issue, but in the end due to Kevin's work and family commitments we decided that I should collate all the info and Kevin would contribute material when required. This issue included plenty of sweet news and a article on the band live in Denmark 1974, present Sweet live review at Cobham, Surrey 28/8/89 etc.
Was released on the 1/05/90 includes: a report on the mammoth Sweet London `Tower Record store' reunion dated 16/3/90, with plenty of photographs, album features, CD reviews etc very highly recommended issue!
Was released on the 1/11/90 includes: another live (Andy Scott) `Wandering Crutchlee's` - Croydon 11/8/90 report, BC live, Paddies releases, and much more.
Was released on the 15/02/91 focuses on the Andy Scott `Sweet Lyric Diary's', Sweet live in America 1975 reprints, and Sweet in Canada 1990 tour etc.
Was released on the 14/07/91 includes: Sweet live at ‘The Cartoon’, Croydon, 27/4/91, `Kerrang' (Heavy metal magazine) reprint, `Tayce' (& Andy Scott)- `Love Is Like Oxygen' cover version 45'/7” report, and Sweet news, reviews galore etc.
